Captain Sonar, Tides of Madness, Legendary: Civil War, Star Wars: Force Awakens Beginner Game and More!

Mansions of Madness: Second Edition

Mansions of Madness: Second Edition is a fully cooperative, app-driven board game of horror and mystery for one to five players that takes place in the same universe asEldritch Horror and Elder Sign. Let the immersive app guide you through the veiled streets of Innsmouth and the haunted corridors of Arkham’s cursed mansions as you search for answers and respite. Eight brave investigators stand ready to confront four scenarios of fear and mystery, collecting weapons, tools, and information, solving complex puzzles, and fighting monsters, insanity, and death. Open the door and step inside these hair-raising Mansions of Madness: Second Edition. It will take more than just survival to conquer the evils terrorizing this town.

Marvel Legendary: Civil War

In Legendary, players take on the roles of Marvel heroes, including the Avengers and X-Men, and team up to defeat an evil Mastermind. Legendary: Civil War is the fourth big box expansion since the Dark City release in 2013 and lets you play through the Civil War storyline from Marvel Comics!

With the Civil War expansion, you can now team up with a partner and take sides against the opposition while playing through the Civil War. The game features playable characters from both sides of the Super Hero Registration act. Will you choose to side with Captain America or Iron Man?

Tides of Madness

Tides of Madness is a sequel to Tides of Time and features gameplay similar to that design. Tides of Time is a drafting game for two players. Each game consists of three rounds in which players draft cards from their hands to build their kingdom. Each card is one of five suits and also has a scoring objective.

After all cards have been drafted for the round, players total their points based on the suits of cards they collected and the scoring objectives on each card, then they record their score. Each round, the players each select one card to leave in their kingdom as a “relic of the past” to help them in later rounds. After three rounds, the player with the the most prosperous kingdom wins.

Tides of Madness adds a new twist to the above game: madness. Some cards, while powerful, harm your psyche, so you must keep an eye on your madness level or else risk losing the game early as your mind is lost to the power of the ancients. More specifically, eight of the eighteen cards in the game feature a madness icon, and while scoring, you receive a madness token for each such icon in your collection of cards. Whoever has the most madness in a round either scores 4 points or discards 1 madness token — and the latter option is valuable because if you ever have nine or more madness, you lose the game immediately.

Captain Sonar

At the bottom of the ocean, no one will hear you scream!

In Captain Sonar, you and your teammates control a state-of-the-art submarine and are trying to locate an enemy submarine in order to blow it out of the water before they can do the same to you. Every role is important, and the confrontation is merciless. Be organized and communicate because a captain is nothing without his crew: the Chief Mate, the Radio Operator, and the Engineer.

All the members of a team sit on one side of the table, and they each take a particular role on the submarine, with the division of labor for these roles being dependent on the number of players in the game: One player might be the captain, who is responsible for moving the submarine and announcing some details of this movement; another player is manning the sonar in order to listen to the opposing captain’s orders and try to decipher where that sub might be in the water; a third player might be working in the munitions room to prepare torpedoes, mines and other devices that will allow for combat.

Captain Sonar can be played in two modes: turn-by-turn or simultaneous. In the latter set-up, all the members of a team take their actions simultaneously while trying to track what the opponents are doing, too. When a captain is ready to launch an attack, the action pauses for a moment to see whether a hit has been recorded — then play resumes with the target having snuck away while the attacker paused or with bits of metal now scattered across the ocean floor.

Multiple maps are included with varying levels of difficulty.

Beyond Baker Street

A heinous crime has been committed. A team of the Kingdom’s finest detectives has been assembled and put on the case. They have a prime suspect, they have a motive, and they know what the opportunity to commit the crime was. Now all they have to do is prove it.

Using powers of deduction and communication, the players work as a team to eradicate dead leads and find clues to prove who, how, and why. All the relevant clues are available to them to do so. They just won’t know it. On top of that, Sherlock Holmes himself is already on the case. Can they solve the crime before he does?

At the start of Beyond Baker Street, players select one of the crimes to solve, and a number of suspects, motives, and opportunities will be available for the players to convict of the crime. Each player holds a set of five clues, but they won’t be able to see their own clues — only their counterparts. Each turn, a player may either:

  • ASSIST another detective
  • INVESTIGATE crime scene
  • CONFIRM evidence
  • ELIMINATE dead leads
  • PURSUE new leads

Players win together if they can gather enough evidence to make a conviction before Holmes does, or they crumble under the stress of the case.

Lord of the Rings: The Flame of the West Saga Expansion

“Time is short. See! The beacons of Gondor are alight, calling for aid. War is kindled. See, there is the fire on Amon Dîn, and flame on Eilenach; and there they go speeding west.”
–Gandalf, The Return of the King

Brave the Paths of the Dead, battle the Corsairs at Pelargir, and stand fast against the Witch-king and the armies of Mordor during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields! The fifth The Lord of the RingsSaga Expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, The Flame of the West draws directly from the key events of the first half of The Return of the King as it returns our attention to Aragorn, the Grey Company, and the plight of Gondor, even while the fates of Frodo Baggins and the One Ring remain uncertain.

With its 165 new cards, The Flame of the West introduces three new scenarios with a decidedly epic bent. War is kindled, and your actions will determine whether or not Gondor stands. Fortunately, you will not ride alone. The Flame of the West introduces a new version of Aragorn to lead you, as well as two new heroes, two boons, and thirty player cards (three copies each of ten different cards) that represent the strength of the bonds that run between the Men of Gondor, the Riders of Rohan, and the Elves and Dúnedain of the Grey Company.

Runebound: Caught in a Web and The Gilded Blade Expansions

The sorceress Ariad once more schemes to conquer Terrinoth with the Caught in a Web Scenario Pack. Now, she commands her arachnid minions to spread insidiously throughout the realm, spinning webs, injecting venom, and preparing for their mistress to cover the world in darkness.

As we mentioned above, Caught in a Web is a Scenario Pack that introduces an entirely new scenario to Runebound. Throughout the course of this scenario , story cards and adventure cards will cause webs to be placed across the map. These webs restrict the heroes’ movement, but they can be destroyed if you’re willing to expend the effort. At the end of the first act, the sorceress Ariad transforms into her spider form and begins to move around the realm. If she places a web in each of the four major cities, all of the heroes lose the game. The only way you can win is by tracking down Ariad and defeating her in battle before another hero can reach her!

Along the way, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with new and hideous monsters or terrifying perils. You may encounter an Arachyura , a spider-like creature that can trap you in its webs and deal lingering damage even after it’s defeated. You may track a nest of spiders to the Smokeblue Hills, or delve deep into tunnels that riddle the ground beneath Terrinoth. Fortunately, a new hero also arrives to save Terrinoth with this expansion: Jonas the Kind. Jonas possesses many unexpected skills learned in a life of crime, but now he uses those same skills to defend the innocent from monsters.

Once a year, the merchants and civilians of Terrinoth come together in a time of celebration and commerce. The most talented craftsmen and the slickest charlatans alike operate under the sign of the Gilded Blade. As new wonders are unveiled and pickpockets work the crowds, even a noble hero can find much to interest him at this gathering.

The Gilded Blade Adventure Pack expands the world of Terrinoth in every game ofRunebound with new sets of skill cards and asset cards that can increase your options for any scenario. New goods like Contraband vary in their return based on how good you are at exploring. Meanwhile, you could claim a skill card like Superiority Complex , which grants you a free trophy whenever another hero is defeated! These assets and skills can be swapped for other sets in your asset or skill decks, giving you the chance to customize your hero more than ever before.

Along with skill and asset cards, this Adventure Pack offers a variety of new adventure cards that can be added to any scenario. You may face off against a Highway Gang that attempts to surround and rob you, but thankfully for the heroes, a new hero also joins the game of Runebound in this expansion. Red Scorpion is a solitary wanderer, and her unnatural agility helps her easily outmaneuver her foes. Whether you take on the sorceress Ariad or battle Dragonlord Margath with Red Scorpion, her flurry of blades spells doom for any enemy of Terrinoth.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game

“The Force, it’s calling to you. Just let it in.”
     –Maz Kanata

Take your first steps into a galaxy full of adventure with The Force Awakens Beginner Game!

Coming in the third quarter of 2016, The Force Awakens Beginner Game allows you to enjoy the action and energy ofStar Wars: The Force Awakens through the lens of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game.

Note: Unlike our other Beginner Games, The Force Awakens Beginner Game will not be followed by a new Star Wars RPG game line. Instead, it draws upon the core mechanics shared by Star Wars: Age of RebellionStar Wars: Edge of the Empire, and Star Wars: Force and Destiny. Players interested in continuing their Star Wars adventures can do so through any of these fully compatible systems.

You and your friends will travel to Jakku, the remote desert planet above which was waged one of the last great battles of the Galactic Civil War. In that battle, the Empire suffered a horrific defeat, and scores of its warships plummeted into Jakku’s arid sands. Shortly afterward, the remnants of the Empire and the nascent New Republic signed their peace treaty, and civilization quickly forgot about Jakku. In the following decades of peace, the planet became a haven for junk scavengers, criminal elements, and those trying to stay hidden from the rest of the galaxy.

It is on this forsaken planet—the same planet that saw the fateful introductions of Rey, BB-8, and Finn—that your adventures begin.

You Are the Heroes

Whether you are new to roleplaying games or a veteran gamer looking to enjoy adventures set amid the conflicts between the Resistance and the First Order, The Force Awakens Beginner Game carries you as deeply into the themes and excitement of the Star Wars universe as you can go. You and your friends become the heroes of the story. You must use your wits to outmaneuver your rivals, and when that’s not possible, you must draw your blasters and fight for your lives!

The beauty of roleplaying games lie in their ability to wrap you in a story that you help push forward through your character’s decisions and actions. In the adventure that comes with The Force Awakens Beginner Game, you and your friends will determine the fate of valuable secrets lost during the Battle of Jakku. When a band of nomads searching the wastes of Jakku came across a wrecked New Republic corvette, they accessed the remains of its central computer and found evidence of something extremely valuable hidden in a secret vault somewhere within the ship.

However, because the rumors of this secret spread quickly across the desert wastes, they have attracted the attention of the vicious Strus Clan who intend to claim the wreck and its secrets for themselves. Now, as they threaten violence against the nomads, you will determine the fate of a decades-old secret formerly coveted by both the New Republic and the Galactic Empire…

Discover Your Story as You Play

As with all the best roleplaying games, The Force Awakens Beginner Game allows you to weave your story on more than one level. Even as your characters are fighting for their lives and rounding the next twist in their action-packed adventure, you and your friends are developing their personalities and determining whether or not your characters will be able to meet their personal goals.

The Force Awakens Beginner Game launches you into this character-focused side of roleplaying by allowing you to choose from any one of four different heroes. Whether you play as the veteran soldier, the ace pilot, the desert explorer, or the peace-loving Abednedo colonist, you step into the shoes of a fully realized person, complete with a unique history and skill set.

You’ll find your character’s history and motivations described on the back of your four-page character portfolio. Each has been carefully developed to ensure you have enough information to get a sense of that character’s unique approach to the adventure, but to leave you enough room to portray the character’s actions and growth according to your own tastes.

The Easiest Game to Master

There is, however, a dark truth to The Force Awakens Beginner Game. It is that when your group sits down to play, not all of you will become heroes. One of you will assume the role of Game Master, and as Game Master, you will be the invisible hand behind all the galaxy’s evils. Nonetheless, you will not be evil, yourself. Instead, as Game Master, your role is more akin to that of the Force, the power that flows through all things—dark and light alike.

The Game Master is the most important player in any roleplaying session, responsible for presenting the world that the hero characters inhabit. As the story moves forward, it is the Game Master’s responsibility to have villains, allies, and bystanders react to the heroes’ actions. It is your duty to help the other players understand the different actions they may take and to interpret the results of their efforts. And The Force Awakens Beginner Game makes it easy for anyone to step into the Game Master’s role.

Designed to be a “learn as you go” experience for both players and Game Masters, The Force Awakens Beginner Game provides a complete adventure, along with helpful tips for running the characters through its different scenes. You’ll find all the applicable rules neatly summarized next to the situations in which they’ll first come into play. Even with zero previous roleplaying experience, you’ll be able to weave together a thrilling and flawless Star Warsadventure for you and your friends to enjoy.

These Are Your First Steps

Loved The Force Awakens? The Force Awakens Beginner Game is your chance to take your next steps into the Star Warsuniverse and live through a brand-new Star Wars adventure!

Even though the Beginner Game is a standalone introduction to Star Wars roleplaying, it is possible for your characters to continue their adventures elsewhere in the galaxy. In fact, there are so many ways to enjoy the Star Wars galaxy, that Fantasy Flight Games has created three separate systems, all of which are fully compatible with The Force Awakens Beginner Game and with each other, but that each pursue a different experience within the Star Warsuniverse.
