The “shufflebuilding” game Smash Up begins with a simple premise: take the 20-card decks of two factions, shuffle them into a deck of forty cards, then compete to crush more bases than your opponents! Each faction involves a different gaming mechanism, and each combination of factions brings a different gaming experience.

In Smash Up: Marvel, players smash up two groups of Marvel characters, such as the vigilant members of The Ultimates or the criminal masterminds HYDRA, to take over bases and score the most victory points. Mix and match the different decks of heroes and villains to see which combinations can best defeat the others! This game allows for fans to create stories that have never existed in the Marvel universe. What combo will you choose?

PARKS Memories: Mountaineer

Box Front, Full Bleed

PARKS Memories is a strategic matching game for two or more players offering simple and flexible gameplay. Parks are represented in tiles laid out in a grid across the table face down. Gameplay includes four simple steps: reveal two tiles; choose one of the revealed tiles and place it in front of you; add a new tile to the board; lock one of the tiles with the hiker token. Gameplay passes from person to person until one player or team has collected three sets of matching park tiles in front of them.

Memories captures a depth of strategy in player abilities which can be activated by finding matches of PARKS resource icons when you reveal tiles. There are a variety of ways to enjoy the game. Play a head to head game, or on teams. Expand the grid size for a bigger challenge, or simplify the game to a memory game without player abilities for younger gamers.

PARKS Memories: Mountaineers is one of three editions of PARKS Memories, highlighting the mountainous national parks of the United States. It features a uniques set of player abilities. Collectively all three editions showcase every US national park.

Unmatched: Little Red Riding Hood vs. Beowulf

Unmatched: Little Red Riding Hood vs. Beowulf, Restoration Games / Mondo Games, 2020 — front cover (image provided by the publisher)

In battle, there are no equals.

ONCE UPON A TIME, Little Red Riding Hood took her basket of nasty tricks and faced off against the legendary Beowulf in this exciting Unmatched set.

“What big eyes you have, Wulfie!”

“That’s called ‘rage’, kid!”

Little Red features a clever card-combo mechanism. Matching icons on the cards she plays to the one in her “basket” (discard pile), triggers potent effects. Meanwhile, Beowulf uses rage to power up his cards for devastating attacks.

Unmatched is a highly asymmetrical miniature fighting game for two or four players. Each hero is represented by a unique deck designed to evoke their style and legend. Tactical movement and no-luck combat resolution create a unique play experience that rewards expertise, but just when you’ve mastered one set, new heroes arrive to provide all new match-ups.

Polynesia

Polynesia - Cover

The frequent tremors, the looming clouds over the crater, and the ever-increasing smell of sulfur make it clear that it is time to escape. Direct your tribe through the waters of the Pacific in search of a new home, safe from the impending eruption of the volcano. Explore new sea routes that lead to unvisited islands, collect resources on those islands to offer to other tribes in exchange for their knowledge, and continue sailing in search of a safe place — all this being done to save as many of your tribe members as possible and lead them to new lands where they can prosper. The most successful individual through this difficult mission will be appointed the supreme chief of the Polynesian tribal group.

In Polynesia, players must save their tribe members from the dangers of the volcano by taking them to the islands that will give them the most points. At the same time, players must try to reach the objectives set by the tide cards, which will vary from one game to another. To succeed, players must collect resources in the form of fish and shells that will allow them to explore new sea routes, use the routes of other players, and sail from one island to another.

Polynesia is played in rounds, and each round is divided into two phases. In the action phase, each player has three turns in which they can perform one of three actions: sail, explore, or populate and fish. In the maintenance phase, the volcano activity is checked for activity, and each player can collect resources depending on the islands where they have tribe members.

Hallertau

Hallertau, Lookout Games, 2021 — front cover (image provided by the publisher)

The Hallertau in Bavaria, Germany is the largest continuous hop-producing region in the world. It prides itself upon being the first in Middle Europe to cultivate hops. This game is set around 1850, when the Hallertau became what it is today.

A chief of a small Bavarian village in the Hallertau, your objective is to increase its wealth and prestige in the eyes of the world.

To achieve this, you will need to supply the local crafts folk with goods from agriculture and sheep breeding.

Place your workers, play your cards right, and let your village shine!

  • Progressive Worker Placement: Action spaces can be used multiple times, becoming more expensive in the process.
  • Two-Field Rotation System: Fields lose their potency over time so fallowing fields allows them to become increasingly effective.
  • Card Combos: You can play cards at any time; this timing—and the combination of cards—can be very powerful.
  • Sheep with an Expiration Date: Breeding sheep early comes with a lot of perks, but, eventually, sheep will die of natural causes.

The Sands of Shurax Expansion allows you to play as the Villian (aka. The Ravager) against the other heroes. Like the heroes, the Villian is able To raise it’s ranks by performing Ambitions. Choose how to ruin the map, with an entire Villian card deck. The Villian will have access to powerful Rituals, which can be performed by expending Ritual Points. The Villian will be forced to react to the heroes, and better yet, force the heroes to react to the Villian. There are several ways to play as the Ravager, which no two games facing off against the heroes will be the same.

Four new bosses appear in the expansion, with each boss having a unique reveal trigger. Additional traits give your hero a distinguishing quality gained at the beginning of the game. More HEXclusive Roles and Races are offered.

Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of the Sands of Shurax expansion is the inclusion of the Black Pyramid, HEXplore very first maze. The Black Pyramid is it’s own play-style. Cantaloop: Book 1 – Breaking into Prison

Cantaloop: Book 1, Lookout Games, 2021 (image provided by the publisher)

The point-and-click adventure game genre was born in 1976 on the PC. In this type of game, the player assumes the role of a character in an interactive story driven by puzzle solving and exploration. This game is a direct adaption of these mechanics to the cardboard medium that requires no electronics to play. In other words, you are holding a classic point-and-click adventure game in book format. You will talk to characters, combine items to solve puzzles, and explore a unique world to get ahead in the story.

In the first part of the Cantaloop Trilogy, you embody the small-time criminal Oz “Hook” Carpenter who just returned from exile, seeking revenge on the person who made you leave in the first place. But thats easier said than done: You wont stand a chance against the most powerful crook of the city all by yourself. You need a team of people with a unique set of skills if you even want the slightest chance to succeed.

Explore 20 beautifully illustrated locations, talk to characters and solve tricky puzzles to gather your crew in this “Point’n’Click” like game. Search and collect items, figure out where to use them and combine them with each other.

– Open World: You decide where you want to go and when.
– Non-Linear Puzzle Design: There’s always at least two puzzles to solve at any given time, so chances that you’ll get stuck are minimized.
– 6-10 hours Playtime: Or 18-30 hours for the entire trilogy – a huge game world to immerse yourself in.
– Story-driven: In the prologue (download the Print & Play at lookout-spiele.de) and the 3 parts of the game, the story slowly ramps up to the big heist on Cantaloop Island.
– Humor: Similar to the old point & click adventure games, you’ll get a funny response for a lot of the combinations you try.
– Non-Destructive: None of the game material gets destroyed in your playthrough. There is only one sheet of paper that you can easily copy.
– Help System: Should you get stuck, there is a vast help section where you can get up to two hints and the solution to any puzzle.
– No Abstract Puzzles: Every puzzle fits into the world and story of Cantaloop.
– Dialogues: Most of Cantaloop’s story is told in speech bubbles, encouraging player groups to roleplay the scenes together.
– Secrets: There MAY be a few easter eggs and unlockables sprinkled throughout Cantaloop, but I’m sure that’s just hearsay.
