Terrinoth is a land of legend. The earth remembers the march of glorious banners and brave deeds; it whispers of the valor of those who vanquished the darkness of the past. Its silent song kindles the embers of hope in those who would stand against the endless night. For forgotten magics and lost legacies wait to be rediscovered by those brave enough to seek them.

Runewars Miniature Game is a new two-player miniatures game of epic, rank-and-file warfare set in the realm of Terrinoth!

For years, the armies of Waiqar the Undying have stayed within their borders, launching only minor raids across the border. But now, a nameless threat stirs within the Mistlands, and legions of undead cross into the realm of Terrinoth under Waiqar’s command! The Daqan Lords have sounded the call to war, and their finest generals lead armies of warriors and golems to take up defensive positions in the border territory of Roth’s Vale. The first battles of the next great war are about to begin.

Runewars Miniatures Game is a game of battles between the great powers of Terrinoth. In each game, you and your opponent will gather armies of miniatures and lead them into battle—blocks of infantry will maneuver for position, cavalry wings will wheel and slam into a weakened flank, and monstrous rune golems or carrion lancers will smash through formations of lesser warriors. Innovative command tools, two distinct factions, and countless ways to customize your experience combine to offer an unparalleled miniatures gaming experience in Runewars. Finally, with forty-eight beautifully sculpted, unpainted figures, you’ll be able to paint and customize your armies to bring an entirely unique touch to your games and enter the hobby of miniatures painting!

Issue Your Commands

Rather than commanding a small group of single figures that all move individually, Runewars invites you to experience war on a grand scale. In every game, you’ll order blocks of  figures to march, wheel, shift, and charge into battle, carefully maneuvering your forces to outflank and destroy your foes. Each block of figures is composed of a number of trays that your figures slot into, and as your unit enters battle and takes losses, you’ll remove figures and trays from the unit.

Obviously, maneuvering blocks of infantry, cavalry, and more exotic units marching in step will take both strategy and tactical skill, and to accomplish, this Runewars offers an innovative command tools that allow you to plan every action your units take.

Every unit in Runewars has a corresponding command tool, like the one you can see below. These command tools are composed of two parts: an action dial on the left and a modifier dial on the right. At the beginning of each round, you’ll set a command tool for each of your units by choosing an action and a modifier for each unit.

Setting your action dial allows you to choose that unit’s primary action—you may march forward, shift your position, reform to adapt to the tides of battle, execute ranged or melee attacks, or rally your troops in the face of terrifying odds. Even as you choose your action with the action dial, you can adapt to the evolving battle by setting your modifier dial—you may turn a march into a deadly charge, boost your defense, increase the damage or panic caused by your attack, or even gain additional actions. Every unit in Runewars offers completely different dials for both sides of the command tool, giving them access to different tactics and unique combinations of actions and modifiers. Leading a column of Barony Knights in a thundering charge feels very different from maneuvering your Skeleton Archers into position to rain arrows on your opponent’s units.

The command tool doesn’t just choose your unit’s actions, it also determines each unit’s initiative. Every action has an initiative number in the upper-left corner of the action symbol, and in each round, units are activated in the order of their initiative numbers. You’ll have to carefully consider the initiative associated with each action. You may decide to charge at an enemy unit—but you won’t know if that unit will still be in its current position by the time you activate! For a closer look at the command tool, head over to the Runewars minisite and keep an eye out for our future previews.

Your command tool offers a variety of actions, but some of the most important involve moving your units around the battlefield. Whether you’re charging into combat or crafting a carefully timed retreat, movement in Runewars is elegantly handled with fixed maneuver templates rather than using a ruler or measuring tape. For instance, if your Reanimates are marching forward at speed two, you’ll simply align the corresponding movement template with a front corner of your unit, then slide the unit forward until the same corner aligns with the end of the maneuver template, as shown below.

Units move across the battlefield by following the path of movement templates.

As you maneuver across the battlefield, your units will inevitably collide with a block of enemy figures. When this happens, the units immediately square up and close in to melee combat, as shown in the diagram below. If a melee unit is locked in combat with another unit and your chosen action is an attack, you’ll be able to roll combat dice and inflict damage, inspire panic, and trigger special abilities. We’ll take a closer look at movement and combat in Runewars in future previews!

When two trays meet on the field of battle (as shown on the left), they square up to attack the enemy formation (as shown on the right).

Crafting an Army

Within each game of Runewars, there are limitless opportunities for creating the perfect army and customizing that army to look and play exactly the way you want. Your starting point for a totally unique army is the two distinct factions included in the game: whether you’re playing as the Daqan Lords or the forces of Waiqar the Undying, you’ll find that the two sides play very differently.

The Daqan Lords are the protectors and rulers of Terrinoth, renowned for the ardor and discipline of their soldiers. Spearmen marching in measured ranks, columns of fully armored mounted knights, and lumbering rune golems animated by magic are commonly found among the forces of the Daqan Lords. Conversely, the legions of Waiqar the Undying inspire dread in all who face them. Reanimates shamble into battle while skeleton archers rain blighted arrows down from the sky—and all the while, fallen warriors rise from the ground and rejoin the ranks of their unit. Some have even seen undead soldiers riding on the backs on carrion worms, spreading disease and corruption with every writhing movement.

The opportunities to customize your game don’t stop when you choose a faction, however. There are almost unlimited ways to carefully tailor your units themselves, by choosing how many trays to include in a unit and what upgrade cards you’ll use. You may sound a Metered March, giving you unparalleled control over where your units end their movement. Or, you may use Master-Crafted Weapons to increase your damage in melee combat. Terrifying Heraldry may panic those who come too close, or a Front Line Rune Golem upgrade card can bring one of these massive constructs into battle alongside lesser figures. Ultimately, Runewars lets you choose exactly how you want your units to perform by choosing which upgrades to use.

Upgrade cards and unit sizes allow you to customize your army’s mechanics, and you’ll have just as much opportunity to create a unique visual impact for your army by painting your figures. Because all Runewars figures come unpainted, every army you create will be completely different from your friends’ armies. Although it’s perfectly alright to play the game with unpainted figures, by painting your units and customizing the battlefield, you’ll create a stunning visual experience for you and your opponent to enjoy with every battle. We’ll offer more information on painting your figures, along with in-depth tutorials, as the game comes closer to release.

And of course, the opportunities for customizing your army and the game don’t stop there. With every new game of Runewars, you can experience new types of deployment—whether you’re catching your opponent in a pincer movement or your forces are split into the four corners of the battlefield. You’ll also be able to choose unique objectives for every game, rewarding you for flanking your foe, gathering powerful resources from the map, or escorting a chosen unit into the heart of your enemy’s position. Choosing exactly how you’ll deploy your units and what objectives you’ll fight for is a crucial consideration at the beginning of each battle, and we’ll explore this more in a future preview!

Enter an Age of War

The great armies of Terrinoth are marching to war, and soon, you’ll be able to take your place as their commander. Collect your miniatures and prepare your army for battle—Runewars Miniatures Game and Organized Play coming soon to The Wandering Dragon.

Standard Format Deck Construction

Deck Construction Rules

The basic points of deck construction for Draft are:

40-card deck (minimum)

Only cards you pick through drafting

Sideboard is cards other than those added to main deck

When you sit down to draft, you open one booster pack, pick one card from it to keep, and pass the rest to your neighbor on the left. Each other player does the same, so you end up with the same number of cards as you would have had you just opened the pack. Once all the cards are picked from the first pack, everyone opens a second pack, picks one card, and passes to the right. The third pack is then passed to the left again. Once all cards are chosen, players build forty-card decks and are randomly paired up to play.

Thundestone Quest

Thunderstone returns with Thunderstone Quest. Recruit your heroes, arm your party, then visit the dungeon — and the dungeon has new perils not seen in prior Thunderstone releases. All-new dungeon tiles create new challenges and rewards as you explore deeper and deeper in the dungeon. Each quest brings new dungeons as well as new side adventures!

Thunderstone is a fantasy deck-building game. Each player starts with a basic deck of cards that they can use to purchase, or upgrade to, other, more powerful cards. Thunderstone Quest brings new play modes to the table. The game will tell a specific story with a series of pre-set dungeon tiles, monsters, heroes and support cards. Each will come with a series of mini-adventures and a story booklet that tells players what happens as they progress through the scenarios.

Once players have completed the quests they will be able to enjoy great replay value with the available selection of monsters, heroes, and support cards, as well as the new dungeon tiles, by choosing random set-ups before the start of play. Aside from heroes such as wizards, fighters, rogues, and clerics, cards will include supplies that heroes need like weapons, spells, items, or light to reach further into the dungeon.

The dungeon deck is created by combining several different groups of monsters together. Certain groups of monsters may be more or less susceptible to different hero types, so players have to take this into account when they choose what to buy.

Smash Up

The “shufflebuilding” game Smash Up starts with a simple premise: Take the twenty-card decks of two factions, shuffle them into a forty-card deck, then compete to smash more Bases than your opponents! Each faction brings a different game mechanism into play – pirates move cards, zombies bring cards back from the discard pile, dinosaurs have huge power – and every combination of factions brings a different play experience.

During play, Base cards (each with their own difficulties and abilities) are in play. You attempt to have the most power on the Base from your minions when the Base is smashed. Sounds easy? How easy is it when an opponent’s Alien-Ninja decides to Beam Up your minions to other Bases – flat out Assassinate them? What about when the Pirate-Dinosaur player Full Sails in and releases King Rex to stomp your minions into the ground, or when the Wizard-Zombies use their Mystic Power to create an Outbreak, suddenly flooding minions onto the Base from the discard pile? Or what if you faced a Zombie-Dinosaur player instead and he created an Outbreak of massive beasts all at once?!?

When a Base is smashed, each player in first, second and third place scores points. Fourth place? Sorry, bro – try harder next time.

With eight different factions, Smash Up includes dozens of combinations to try. Pirate-Aliens play different than Ninja-Aliens, for instance. Which will you use to smash up your opponents?

And did we mention the dinosaurs have laser beams?

Smash Up: What Were We Thinking?

Never let a cute face fool you, there’s a beatin’ awaiting you behind those cuddly smiles (didn’t Pretty Pretty Smash Up teach you anything?!?!) But it doesn’t end there, if you survive the onslaught of the teddy bears, you have rock stars, grannies, and explorers awaiting… seriously, what were we thinking?

Smash Up: What Were We Thinking returns to the wild randomness of the early days of Smash Up. By combining this expansion with your Smash Up sets, will you take Zombie Rock Stars against Explorer Dinosaurs? What about Time Travelling Grannies versus Teddy Bear Vampires? It’s all possible now! All your dreams can finally come true!

Mystic Vale

A curse has been placed on the Valley of Life. Hearing the spirits of nature cry out for aid, clans of druids have arrived, determined to use their blessings to heal the land and rescue the spirits. It will require courage and also caution, as the curse can overwhelm the careless who wield too much power.

In Mystic Vale, 2 to 4 players take on the role of druidic clans trying to cleanse the curse upon the land. Each turn, you play cards into your field to gain powerful advancements and useful vale cards. Use your power wisely, or decay will end your turn prematurely. Score the most victory points to win the game!

Mystic Vale uses the innovative “Card Crafting System”, which lets you not only build your deck, but build the individual cards in your deck, customizing each card’s abilities to exactly the strategy you want to follow.

Guildhall

Do you have a thirst for adventure? Is your middle name danger? Do you just like treasure? Form a party of adventurers to help you be victorious! The more members of each class you have, the greater the bonus they’ll give you – but be careful; your opponents might try to poach your party members!

In Guildhall Fantasy: Fellowship, 2-4 players compete to create the perfect party by recruiting adventurers into their guildhall chapters. Collect sets of cards with unique abilities to control the table, and complete a full chapter to claim victory cards. Will you go for points quickly, or build up your special powers? Which will lead to ultimate victory? Only you and the gamemaster know!

Trains

In Trains, the players are such capitalists, managing private railways companies and striving to become bigger and better than the competition. The game takes place in modern times, with bullet trains, freight trains and more. You will start with a small set of cards, but by building a more effective deck throughout the game, you will be able to place stations and lay rails over the maps of Osaka, Tokyo or other locations. The trick is to purchase the cards you want to use, then use them as effectively as possible. Gain enough points from your railways and you will ultimately manage the most powerful railroads in modern Japan!

Giants have emerged from their strongholds to threaten civilization as never before. Hill giants are stealing all the grain and livestock they can while stone giants have been scouring settlements that have been around forever. Fire giants are press-ganging the smallfolk into the desert, while frost giant longships have been pillaging along the Sword Coast. Even the elusive cloud giants have been witnessed, their wondrous floating cities appearing above Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate. Where is the storm giant King Hekaton, who is tasked with keeping order among the giants?

The humans, dwarves, elves, and other small folk of the Sword Coast will be crushed underfoot from the onslaught of these giant foes. The only chance at survival is for the small folk to work together to investigate this invasion and harness the power of rune magic, the giants’ weapon against their ancient enemy the dragons. The only way the people of Faerun can restore order is to use the giants’ own power against them.

7 Wonders: Duel

In many ways 7 Wonders Duel resembles its parent game 7 Wonders as over three ages players acquire cards that provide resources or advance their military or scientific development in order to develop a civilization and complete wonders.

What’s different about 7 Wonders Duel is that, as the title suggests, the game is solely for two players, with the players not drafting cards simultaneously from hands of cards, but from a display of face-down and face-up cards arranged at the start of a round. A player can take a card only if it’s not covered by any others, so timing comes into play as well as bonus moves that allow you to take a second card immediately. As in the original game, each card that you acquire can be built, discarded for coins, or used to construct a wonder.

Each player starts with four wonder cards, and the construction of a wonder provides its owner with a special ability. Only seven wonders can be built, though, so one player will end up short.

Players can purchase resources at any time from the bank, or they can gain cards during the game that provide them with resources for future building; as you acquire resources, the cost for those particular resources increases for your opponent, representing your dominance in this area.

A player can win 7 Wonders Duel in one of three ways: each time you acquire a military card, you advance the military marker toward your opponent’s capital, giving you a bonus at certain positions; if you reach the opponent’s capital, you win the game immediately; similarly, if you acquire any six of seven different scientific symbols, you achieve scientific dominance and win immediately; if none of these situations occurs, then the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Colt Express

On the 11th of July, 1899 at 10 a.m., the Union Pacific Express has left Folsom, New Mexico, with 47 passengers on board. After a few minutes, gunfire and hurrying footsteps on the roof can be heard. Heavily armed bandits have come to rob honest citizens of their wallets and jewels. Will they succeed in stealing the suitcase holding the Nice Valley Coal Company’s weekly pay, despite it having been placed under the supervision of Marshal Samuel Ford? Will these bandits hinder one another more than the Marshal since only the richest one of them can come out on top?

In Colt Express, you play a bandit robbing a train at the same time as other bandits, and your goal is to become the richest outlaw of the Old West. The game consists of five rounds, and each round has two phases:

Phase 1: Schemin’ Each player plays 2-5 action cards on a common pile, with the cards being face up or face down depending on the type of the round. Instead of playing a card, a player can draw three cards from her deck.Phase 2: Stealin’ The action cards are carried out in the order they were played, with a player’s best laid plans possibly not panning out due to mistakes and oversights!

The game takes place in a 3D train in which the bandits can move from one car to another, run on the roof, punch the other bandits, shoot them, rob the passengers, or draw the Marshal out of position. The train has as many cars as the number of players, and each car is seeded with gems, bags of loot or suitcases at the start of play.

Each player starts a round with six cards in hand, with each card showing one of these actions. At the start of a round, a round card is revealed, showing how many cards will be played; whether they’ll be played face up or face down, or individually or in pairs; and what action will occur at the end of the round (e.g., all bandits on top of the train move to the engine). You can pick up loot, gems or suitcases only by playing a “steal” card when you’re in a train car that holds one of these items — but since everyone is planning to get these goods, you’ll need to move, punch and shoot to get others out of your way. You can punch someone only in the same car as you, and when you do, the other bandit drops one of the goods he’s collected and is knocked into an adjacent car.

Each player’s character has a special power, such as starting the round with an extra card, playing your first card face down, or pocketing a bag of loot when you punch someone instead of letting it hit the ground.

You can shoot someone in an adjacent car or (if you’re running on top of the train) anyone in sight, and when you do, you give that player one of your six bullet cards; that card gets shuffled in the opponent’s deck, possibly giving her a dead card in hand on a future turn and forcing her to draw instead of playing something. If the Marshal ends up in the same car as you, likely due to other bandits luring him through the train, he’ll be happy to give you a bullet, too.

At the end of the game, whoever fired the most bullets receives a $1,000 braggart bonus, and whoever bagged the richest haul wins!
