Better Late Than Never, right? The Dragon turned 10 on June 29^th 2022, so we waited until our 11^th Anniversary to celebrate! Wait? What? Yeah, it took a year to figure this out and it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but it’s finally time to celebrate! For the past 10 11 years, you have allowed us to live out our dream. We had no idea what we were doing 10 11 years ago and have been feeling our way since day one, but you, as always, lifted us up and helped us get here. Thank you.

June 30th 2012: When we first opened back in 2012, we moved into the second floor of a former dance studio. We heard over and over again how we couldn’t run a retail business, let alone a brand new retail business, out of the second floor of a building. You proved them wrong. Thank you.

September 2013: When we had to move into a new location (after being open less than a year), a few weeks before reopening, we were told we needed a complete sprinkler system installed before we could open in the new location. You rallied around us and helped make it happen. It was very much a real life, “It’s a Wonderful Life” moment. Thank you.

May 2019: When we took another leap and opened Thistle & Twig, our nature and gift store within a store, we wanted to share another hobby of ours, our love of birding, with everyone.  We know board games and birding are both hobbies, but also, quite a mix.  We were so anxious about the whole bird store in a game store thing, but you immediately embraced Thistle & Twig.  To our surprise, a lot of gamers we know are into birding and birders we came to know took to gaming. It’s been quite an experience and a lot of fun. This gave us the confidence to branch out even more (yeah, we went there) and expand into arts & crafts, bags, candles, mugs, pet toys, puzzles, soaps, and so much more. We’ve had a blast surprising you with these unique finds and we can’t wait to keep introducing new things. Thank you.

March 2020: The pandemic. A lot of sleepless nights and pivoting to keep things rolling. It was a literal race against the clock to get our online store and delivery service up and running, but you stepped up once again and kept us going. You had me driving all over Illinois and I couldn’t have been more grateful. Thank you.

October 2021: Shortly after the pandemic turned everything upside down, we reinvented and reopened The Dragon with something we had always wanted to do, The Outsider Inn. Our little fantasy themed tavern room has now hosted over a hundred birthdays, showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, anniversaries, and many, many, many private D&D parties. Thank you.

August 2023: While we did our homework and lots and lots of planning, we had no business experience whatsoever when we opened The Dragon. Just a love for the hobby and a dream. You helped us every step of the way and here we are, 10 11 years later… All, thanks to you. 

So after this roller coaster decade of The Wandering Dragon’s life, we are now working on the opportunity to buy the building The Dragon has called home for the past 10 years. We will always be The Wandering Dragon, but we now actually have a chance to settle into this community, forever. We will keep you updated on whether or not we can make this a reality, but it’s pretty cool that we are even talking about it. Thank you.
